May Day blog: “The Battleship Potemkin” by Sergei Eisenstein

It’s May Day, comrades! International Workers’ Day!

For today, one of my special favorites: “The Battleship Potemkin,” directed by Sergei Eisenstein. This is a long YouTube clip – over an hour – but it’s the whole movie. It has everything: pathos, heroism, death, revolution, and a happy ending. And Alexander Antonov, who plays the rebellious sailor Vakulinchuk, is adorable. And this version uses Shostakovich for background music yet.

Unite, my brothers and sisters!
