For Halloween: The Great Pumpkin

great pumpkin

“It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” was one of the first televised Peanuts specials, and one of the best. Here are a few selected scenes dealing with Linus’s misguided belief in the Great Pumpkin (who will only rise from the most sincere pumpkin patch in the world), and Sally’s reaction when she realized that she’s wasted her whole Halloween evening.

“YOU OWE ME RESTITUTION!”

  1. Brings back happy memories of watching this as a child.

  2. I love Linus’ voice. And Sally sounds just like my little 5-year old friend Zoe (friend’s granddaughter). And the “IF the Great Pumpkin comes” gaff; sounds like my prayers often; but God knows how skeptical I am and probs doesn’t hold it against me. Thanks for the memories and insights.

    • For me, it was all about the idea that “sincere” believe was valid; it had nothing to do with the thing/person/entity you believed in. You can never be sufficiently sincere, because doubt always enters your mind. See this pathetic link for a sordid real-world example of Linus and the Great Pumpkin:
